who are we?

The Church of Christ New Zealand is an Independent Protestant church, which was started by Pastor Fred Wilson in 1953.

The church is situated in Mount Roskill on the corners of Dominion and Mt Albert roads and has grown steadily in size to include a large auditorium seating around 1000 as well as offices, a smaller auditorium, and a full gymnasium for youth activities.

The church has branches in Manurewa and Glen Eden as well as in Osaka, Japan and supports missionaries working with New Tribes Mission in the Pacific rim area and North Africa.

In the late 1980's, China began to relax some of its strict controls and small numbers of Chinese academics came to New Zealand on short-term Visas for study at our Universities. As well, immigrants from Taiwan and Hong Kong and Malaysia began to see New Zealand as a desirable destination.

As Church members reached out to these new visitors to our city with the gospel message, small home groups were started and some early converts made. After the Tiananmen Square incident several of the new believers from PRC applied for refugee status and were allowed to remain. At the same time the NZ government began to encourage immigration and thousands of Asians from these areas became permanent residents in NZ. Work began to reach these people for Christ and slowly and steadily our Asian church congregation grew from a few people to over a hundred members.

Because of difficulties with language translation in our regular services, a separate Sunday morning Asian service was begun as well as a regular Tuesday night Asian bible study. This continues until today. A Kiwi Pastor, ably supported by co-workers from PRC, Taiwan and Malaysia, serves the Asian Church which holds its separate meetings in the gymnasium.
